Volunteer Appreciation Week continues — and it’s time for a Warehouse Volunteer Spotlight 💫 Please meet Marcheela Barbour McNeil

Q - Why do you volunteer?

A - I’ve always wanted to give back, always wanted to do more for others, but when I was working I could never find the right place to put that energy. I knew I wanted to do something to feed the homeless, and I actually started doing that with my church, but that service only happens once every three months. Now that I’m retired, I have all this free time on my hands. I try to choose things that I know I’ll enjoy. I enjoy helping the seniors, I enjoy gardening, so I’ve gotten involved in volunteering for things like that. Wherever I feel I can help, I want to help. I’m also a Christian, so for me that means I believe in helping others who are less fortunate than myself. Even though I’ve been a Christian for a long time, I feel that recently I’ve really started to take that seriously and put my beliefs into practice.

Q — What got you interested in volunteering at Share?

Well, the real reason is that Share is close. I live 5 blocks away from the Share warehouse, so it’s easy to get here. When I need to, or want to, I can walk there, and I think I’m going to start doing that more. It’s good exercise! But I mentioned before that I like helping people in need, and Share is a place where I see that happening. Every 3 months, my church volunteers at Chosen 300, a homeless shelter on Spring Garden, and we serve food to the homeless. I really enjoy that, but it’s only every 3 months. I like coming here to volunteer because it makes me feel good.

Q — What do you do when you’re not volunteering at Share?

One of the things I like to do the most is go to church. I sing in the choir at my church, I go to rehearsal, and I volunteer at my church. I do anything I can with my church family, including volunteering and helping people in need. I also like to visit my daughter in northern Jersey when I can.
