Free Food Gardening Class at Nice Roots Farm

Share Food Program’s Nice Roots Farm is excited to be hosting a free, hands-on food gardening class on Wednesday, September 7 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. There are currently only a few spots left in the class – RSVP here!

In just two hours, folks will learn everything they need to know about starting a container vegetable garden for the fall, including:

·    Which veggies can be planted and harvested in fall (carrots! lettuce! collards! beets! and more) 

·    How to select, place and prepare your pots 

·    How to choose the best type of soil for container veggies 

·    How to water and fertilize for best growth 

·    How and when to harvest your bounty

“We are so excited to be offering this free class to bring folks together and make growing food more accessible,” says Ellie Kaplan, manager of Nice Roots Farm. “Many people have an interest in food gardening but don’t realize how easy it is to start. It is possible to grow your own food at a very low cost, and even with limited outdoor space!”

Nice Roots Farm’s food gardening class on September 7 will be taught in partnership with Penn State Extension Master Gardeners. The class is free and open to anyone ages 18 and up living in the following zip codes: 19133, 19121, 19122, 19140, 19134, 19132, 19104, 19123, 19139, 19142, 19146, and 19129. 

Our goal is to be able to offer classes like this one more often so we can reach more folks and cover plenty of topics. Keep an eye out early next year for our free six-week food gardening course called Seed to Supper!

Nice Roots Farm is an urban agriculture project located in the West Allegheny neighborhood of Philadelphia. Through partnerships with the Philadelphia Orchard Project, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society, and Penn State Extension, the farm now features 20+ fruiting trees, two high tunnels for extended season growing and harvesting and 20+ raised beds.

The quarter-acre farm grows fully organic, chemical-free vegetables and herbs, and donates the yield to the community, to Share-affiliated pantries and mutual aid networks. The main function of Nice Roots Farm is to serve as a demonstration and educational space for those interested in exploring the impacts of urban farming and gardening on hunger in local and regional contexts.
